Mastra – prototype and productionize AI features

Mastra was our first investment out of Orange Collective Fund I, back in early 2025. And we’re very fortunate, because they are doing exceptionally well. Our first investment is a top candidate for a fund returner.

Mastra is the TypeScript Agent Framework. It’s built by the team that brought you Gatsby, and allows you to prototype and productionize AI features with a modern JavaScript stack.

  • Our first check was the day before they started Y Combinator. We gave them the max they would take.
  • Our second check was the very next day.
  • Mastra recently announced they closed a $13 million seed round backed by more than 120 investors. The round represents what the company describes as the largest post-YC cap table in several years.

Why do we like this team so much? Because we love building with them and you really get to know a team when you’re building your own software, using their tools, right alongside them.

Here’s our original memo on investing in Mastra, which we shared with our LPs as soon as we wired our check, to make it easy for them coinvest (with no fees). Our memo is built using Mastra.

More recently, Mastra published a blog post about my Partner Dave Yen building our AI-native VC operating system using Mastra. Companies like PayPal, Adobe, Elastic, and Docker are either using Mastra live or have written publicly about their usage of it.

According to NPM data, Mastra is now the third-fastest-growing JavaScript framework ever measured, reaching 150,000 weekly downloads in roughly one year, and now at 220,000 weekly downloads. Gatsby took four years to reach 190,000 weekly downloads.

Mastra’s recent seed round was led by Y Combinator, with participation from Paul Graham, Gradient Ventures, Dropbox cofounder Arash Ferdowsi, Vercel founder Guillermo Rauch, Replit CEO Amjad Masad, former Coinbase CTO Balaji Srinivasan, alongside institutional backers like SVAngel, Runa Capital, basecase capital, Terrence Rohan, Palm Drive, Pioneer Fund, Liquid2, Defy, Lombardstreet, Scale Asia, Moonfire, and Transpose, among others. Other founder investors include: Tristan Handy of dbt, David Cramer of Sentry, Alex Atallah of OpenSea, Rafael Garcia of Clever, Kulveer Taggar of Zeus, and Adrien Treuille of Streamlit.
